Weird gifts make the best gifts

I am last-minute on everything. I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping.

But! With maybe two days to go before the absolute last possible shipping day (that’s THREE days before Boxing Day!), I managed to put up in my store some of the latest stuff I made. If you order quick, I can get them to you before Christmas. (Or maybe you want New Years presents, that’s cool too.)

First up, there’s the ornaments I hand-sewed. There are only seven left and they sold really quickly at the craft fair:

Available in beige, marine blue, yellow, and hot pink. Only $10 + s&h!

And then, for the true weirdo in your life, I present to you… “fake” records.

I’ve alluded to making these in a previous post, but here are a few of them. I had an old box of 45lps that didn’t have sleeves, so I made homemade sleeves for them. Eventually, I bought more records and made more sleeves. It’s all a tribute to my love of record collecting that I was obsessed with as a teen. You get:

  • a sewn sleeve advertising a fictitious album/rockstar/song on the front, and with a short story from me on the back
  • a real! mystery! 45lp!! something from the 1950s – 1980s (the record has nothing to do with the sleeve but YES you can actually play it on a record player)
  • documentation/description of what the hell this is, so that when you give it as a gift, the receiver thinks that the person who made it is nuts but not the person who gave it.

As I explained to a stranger at the craft fair, it’s basically like an artist’s book only it’s a record sleeve instead and you get a record too.

I made several versions of each (for instance, there are several albums called “You Run Out of Lies!” with eyes on them and the same story on back), but each one is a little different and they do have a great handmade feel to them.

All this… for $10. Come on. You can’t buy just the 45lp anymore for $10. Well, probably you could, but it would have a sleeve AND THIS ONE DOES!

I just want to bring your attention that LP is an abbreviation for Long Player, speed: 33 1/3 rpm. 45 pertains to 45 rpm. So “45lp” is like when you wanna rock out chipmunk style and flip “insert album name here” to speed 45. 45’s is 45’s, 7 inches, 7 inch singles, singles, four fifths or donuts. I think this is a cool project but it loses all authenticity when one reads “love of record collecting” and “45lp” in the same paragraph. Paz.

I have no reason to doubt that you’re right. Honestly, i just liked going to the record store and buying records. I’m not a dj, or an expert, or even a true collector by any means – I was a teenager who liked music. Sorry if that makes the project lose “authenticity” for you.
